Children’s Charter for Primary Health Care
2021 will be marked as the year of the launch of the “Children’s Charter in Primary Health Care” promoted by the IAC- Instituto de Apoio à Criança.
The DGS – Directorate-General for Health, through the National Programme for the Prevention of Life Cycle Violence and the National Programme for Child and Youth Health, also joins IAC in the Promotion of Children’s Rights in Primary Health Care, with the launch of this “Children’s Charter in Primary Health Care”, which has the support of the Municipality of Lisbon.
At its origin, the Charter of the Hospitalized Child (CHC), adopted in 1988 in Leiden, Netherlands, enshrines the rights of the child before, during and after a hospital stay. The IAC launched, in 1996, the 1st edition of the CCH in Portugal, with the objectives of raising awareness in the community about the rights of the child in health services and to increase health literacy among children and families.
Since the 1st edition, the dissemination of the CCH has had an incredibly positive effect on the humanization of Hospital Paediatric services, involving all health professionals, families, and children in its fulfilment. After years spent in hospital paediatric wards proclaiming the rights of children in these contexts, the desire has emerged to raise awareness among professionals, families, and the children themselves about their rights in the context of primary healthcare, which has been the priority over hospital admission and treatment.
