What’s next? Steps are urgent to fill gaps and re-establish priorities
A strong consensus emerged from the Big Meeting ‘First Years Count! What’s next? -on 17 September 2021: Facing the numerous scientific evidences and the multiple data and shared reflections, today is known much more about the importance of the early years of life and, as such, it is urgent to take steps to fill gaps and re-establish priorities, searching a healthier and more sustainable society and happier people.
The Big Meeting results from the commitment and interaction of a coalition of 25/26 entities (representing thousands of organisations in Portugal) in the framework of the national campaign – First Years First priority called Primeiros Anos a Nossa Prioridade.
The conclusions of the Big Meeting are the basis and foundation for the Proposals for Action that the campaign is committed to propose very soon.
In the closing session, the Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, Ana Mendes Godinho, who underlined the importance and timeliness of this initiative, aiming at the need for progress in the de-institutionalisation of children, in the educational orientation of early childhood and in the real access to health, education, housing and nutrition for all children. In this context, she also underlined that the Child Guarantee, instituted at European level during the Portuguese presidency, will help to materialise these steps.
