Did you know that…Play is essential for child development?
Play is the most natural activity for children, helping them to get to know themselves, explore their emotions and the world around them.
In play, the child becomes intensely involved as they explore their interests and encounter “tailor-made” challenges that can lead to new learning.
Several studies have shown the relationship between play and the development of social, reasoning and communication skills.
Did you know that… Experiences of neglect or maltreatment have negative effects on a child’s brain?
The way brain development occurs from birth will influence learning, behaviour and physical and mental health. Growing up in a vulnerable environment, where the child is subject to high levels of stress, will be a detrimental factor for his or her brain development. The child will learn ways of thinking and acting that may make it difficult for him/her to adapt throughout life.
To mitigate the negative impact of neglect and/or maltreatment, it will be essential to widen the child’s support network by ensuring the support of attentive and sensitive adults.
Did you know that…Exposure to violent situations at an early age can have a negative impact on a child’s development?
Even if they are not direct actors, living with episodes of violence increases the likelihood of children suffering from post-traumatic stress, often associated with a state of continuous alertness and feelings of overwhelm and helplessness, which can lead to various types of mental and physical health problems.
Did you know that…Positive and stable relationships are fundamental for children to learn to deal with their emotions?
The child develops meaningful relationships with different caregivers. The security and predictability of these relationships contributes to the development of the child’s social and emotional competencies.
Aspects such as empathy, problem-solving skills and the ability to interact with others are associated with the quality of the relationships a child establishes at an early age.
Did you know that….Quiet, predictable routines are very important for children to feel safe?
Children’s everyday life involves a sequence of events, including, for example, moments of play, eating and rest. From an early age children are able to anticipate these events, moulding their behaviour accordingly. Having more or less certain times for eating, bathing or sleeping increases predictability and promotes the child’s emotional regulation. However, routines do not have to be rigid and inflexible! In everyday life, unexpected situations can arise, which should be faced naturally, without guilt or anxiety by the adults. These situations should be seen as learning opportunities for the children themselves.
